Building Global Connections Through Learning
The Japan‑America Society and Black Ships Festival of Rhode Island (JASRI) is devoted to fostering curiosity, cultural understanding, and meaningful cross‑cultural learning for students, families, and communities. Central to this mission is the Commodore Matthew C. Perry Global Initiative, a collaborative program with Roger Williams University that creates lasting educational and cultural bridges between Rhode Island and Japan. Through study abroad experiences, students explore Japan’s vibrant traditions, contemporary culture, and technological innovations.
Creative Hands‑On Learning Activities
Our educational programs focus on inspiring learners of all ages through interactive workshops and art‑making experiences rooted in Japanese culture. Participants engage with traditional artistic techniques and cultural concepts — from sumi‑e brush painting to mindfulness through art — encouraging curiosity about world cultures and enhancing appreciation for diverse ways of seeing and creating.
Social‑Emotional Learning Through Culture
A key part of our approach is integrating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into cultural education. These experiences — whether through art, crafts, conversation, or performance — help students build emotional awareness, empathy, positive relationships, and inclusive thinking. By creating safe spaces for dialogue and creative expression, our outreach programs support personal growth alongside cultural discovery.
Learning About Identity and Inclusion
JASRI also offers training and discussions focused on identity and unconscious bias for schools and community groups. These sessions help educators and students understand how bias affects interactions and provide strategies to foster more respectful, inclusive learning environments. Programs like this support greater cultural competence and strengthen community connections.
Explore and Create
From witnessing global artistic traditions to trying your own hand at Japanese‑inspired art, JASRI invites learners to explore, create, and reflect. Our workshops encourage participants to think like artists, share their stories, and start meaningful conversations about culture and heritage in their communities.
